What is' ‘Healthful’?
No, it’s not a typo… I don’t mean helpful. Healthful is correct. But, what does it mean in the world of health and wellbeing?
When speaking about health, or working with clients I always ask whether the wellbeing practice they are undertaking is health-ful. This word is often met with confusion, rightly so, it’s a word I made up.
And, what it means to me is ‘Is what you’re doing adding to your health’. The most common dietary practices people use include restriction or removal of a food, social event, or habit in order to achieve a wellness goal. Unfortunately 99% of the time this leads to a breakdown of the new habit. On a individual level I hope to encourage people to create a set self-focused well-being practices that are always healthful.
On a population and public health level I describe myself as a health advocate and compassionate campaigner for well-being. I want to use my Nutrition powers and advocacy to campaign for better food policy, sustainable practices for the future and end food poverty.
